HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a 12-mile strenuous hike at the Grand Circle. On Tuesday, a moderately strenuous 7-mile hike with a 1,400-foot elevation gain on a steep mountain biking trail. On Wednesday, a moderate 2.8-mile hike with an 800-foot elevation gain at Calico Tanks. On Thursday, a moderate 3-mile star hike at Echo Canyon. Bring a flashlight. On Friday, a moderate 5-mile hike with a 600-foot elevation gain along a section of the Old Spanish Trail. Hiking poles recommended. On Saturday, a moderate 3- to 4-mile hike at Red Springs West. Also Saturday, an easy to moderate 3-mile hike at Fossil Ridge (515-5367).
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three-to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's website: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, an art class for those 15 and older. No experience necessary and all supplies are included. On Friday, a canyon clean-up is scheduled. On Saturday, a Spring Mountain Ranch State park ranger will share knowledge of the area and take questions. Also Saturday, a program for 2-6 year olds on animals at Red Rock Canyon. On Feb. 13, a scavenger hunt in the Discovery Plaza exhibit area. Stop by the visitor center in the morning to get materials (515-5367).
Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
Valley of Fire: Saturday, a program from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 and repeated at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the visitor center on the Anasazi culture area. On Feb. 13, a guided petroglyph tour from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mouse's Tank Trailhead (397-2088).
