HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, a strenuous 6-mile hike with some scrambling at Ash Canyon. On Wednesday, a moderately strenuous 5-mile hike with an 1,400-foot elevation gain. On Friday, an easy, 3-mile hike toward the Calico Hills parking area. On March 13, an easy to moderate 3-mile hike at Calico Basin (515-5367).
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three-to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's website: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.
Valley of Fire: from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 13, hike to the Fire Canyon Overlook on a guided Rainbow Vista hike (397-2088).
OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, an art class for those 15 and older. No experience necessary and all supplies are included. On Friday, a canyon clean-up is scheduled. On Saturday, an interpreter from the Wetlands Park will speak about the area. Also Saturday, a program for 2-6 year olds on the Mohave Desert. On March 13, a program for 3-8 year olds that features animal-related mini-mysteries to solve (515-5367).
Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness: From March 13-19, volunteer in the wilderness just north of Las Vegas. Work will include pulling out barbed wire and fence posts, rolling up barbed wire strands and possibly hiking some material out. Some hiking will be involved daily.
