Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a moderate, 4-5-mile hike at La Madre Springs. also Monday, a moderately strenuous 7-mile hike with a 1,400-foot elevation gain at Sandstone Loop. Tuesday, an easy, 2-mile hike along the Ash Meadows Trail. On Friday, a moderate, 4-5-hike at Oak Creek (515-5367).

Around The Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three-to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's website: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Friday, an ongoing program from 10 a.m. to noon at the visitor center on the diversity of animals at the Red Rock Canyon area. Also Friday, a canyon clean-up (515-5367).

Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.

Valley of Fire: On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., meet at the visitor center to explore how to find desert bighorn sheep. On Nov. 28, a program at the visitor center from 11 a.m. to noon on discovering local Anasazi history using architectural and pottery analysis. A Leave No Trace trainers course is scheduled for Dec. 4-5. The two-day course includes one night of camping and after the course, participants will become a Leave No Trace trainer and receive a certificate from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics in Boulder, Colo. Reservations must be made by Thursday (397-2088).
