HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a moderate, 4-mile hike at Mount Charleston around the Rainbow Trail area. On Friday, a moderate, 3 ½-mile hike with a 900-foot elevation gain at North Loop. On Saturday, an easy, ½-mile walk at Corn Creek Spring (515-5367).
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three-to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's website: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, an art class for those 15 and older. No experience is necessary and all supplies are included. On Thursday, an ongoing discussion in the visitor center from 10 a.m. to noon on the desert tortoise. On Friday, a program for 2-10 year olds about bats. Also Friday, a program ongoing from 10 a.m. to noon in the visitor center about animals at Red Rock Canyon. On Saturday, a program for 2-10 year olds on hummingbirds. Also Saturday, an ongoing story time from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday will also feature an astronomy program from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the visitor center. Gates close at 7 p.m. A $7 entrance fee per vehicle will be charged (515-5367).
Paralyzed Veterans of America will be hosting a free gun clinic with National Rifle Association instructors at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 24. Also Sept. 24 is a practice and registration for the last trap shoot on the Paralyzed Veterans of America national tour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an informal reception at 4 p.m. On Sept. 25 and 26 is a year-end trap shoot at 9 a.m. On Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. is a banquet awards ceremony at Aliante Station, 7300 Aliante Parkway. On Sept. 27 is a pistol shoot at 10 a.m. All shooting events will be at the Clark County Shooting Park, 11357 N. Decatur Blvd. For more information, call 646-0040.
