Outdoor activities around Southern Nevada

HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, watch “The Day the Earth Almost Died,” a documentary about the Permian mass extinction, then view Permian fossils on a moderately strenuous, 2½-mile hike to Fossil Ridge; for ages 10 and older. Also on Monday, bring a flashlight for a moderate, three-mile full-moon hike on the Moenkopi Trail; for ages 12 and older. On Wednesday, bring a sketchbook for a moderate, three-mile hike to the First Creek grotto that will include a 30-minute break to draw pictures; for ages 12 and older. On March 3, look for wildflowers on an easy-to-moderate, four-mile hike; for ages 10 and older.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, create a masterpiece in an art class for ages 15 and older. Also on Tuesday, view types of arachnids, reptiles, birds and mammals found in Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 11 a.m. to noon at the visitor center. On Saturday, learn about Nevada’s state reptile, the desert tortoise, from 10 a.m. to noon at the visitor center.
