HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn about native plants and look for wildlife on an easy, two-mile walk around the Moenkopi Trail; for all ages. Also on Monday, discuss the geological and biological features along the Moenkopi Trail on a moderate, two-mile evening hike; for ages 10 and older. On Tuesday, learn about the night world of bats at Red Spring; for ages 15 and older. On Aug. 5, enjoy the cool morning air on an easy-to-moderate, three-mile walk to the First Creek Grotto; for ages 8 and older.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, view types of arachnids, reptiles, birds and mammals found in Red Rock in a tabletop exhibit from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Wednesday, kids 5 and older can check out the Petroglyph Wall and then draw their own version of a petroglyph. On Thursday, learn about the animals that live in Red Rock in a tabletop exhibit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the visitor center. On Saturday, meet Mascot Max, a representation of Mojave Max, and learn about the state reptile, the desert tortoise. Also on Saturday, bring your kids for story time at 11 and 11:30 a.m.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.

Mount Charleston: Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort will host the 21st annual Festival in the Pines, a fundraising event for the Spring Mountain Volunteer Association, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 4. There will be craft, jewelry and clothing vendors as well as workshops and information sessions about activities in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Admission to festival is $3 per person, or $5 per family.

Muzzleloading class: The Nevada Department of Wildlife will host an introductory muzzleloading class from 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Clark County Shooting Complex Education Center, 11357 N. Decatur Blvd. This free class will explain the types of muzzleloading rifles available to recreational shooters, safety and techniques for loading and shooting.
