Outdoor activities around Southern Nevada

HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn the medicinal uses of plants found along the Lost Creek Trail on an easy, 1½-mike hike; for ages 8 and older. Also on Monday, discuss the geology, plants and animals encountered on a moderate, three-mile hike in Oak Creek Canyon; for ages 10 and older. On Tuesday, learn about bats during an evening at Red Spring; for ages 15 and older. On Wednesday, explore the wild world of Red Rock on an easy, half-mile walk; for all ages.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, view types of arachnids, reptiles, birds and mammals found in Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Wednesday, create a piece of jewelry inspired by the colors of Red Rock; for ages 8 and older. On Thursday, learn about the animals that live in Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the visitor center. On Friday, help clean up along a trail. On Saturday, participate in a nature writing workshop for ages 15 and older. Also on Saturday, geologist Nick Saines will share his expertise on geology at 1 p.m.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.

Free fishing clinic: The Nevada Department of Wildlife will host a free family fishing clinic at 9 a.m. Aug. 18 at Floyd Lamb Park. Participants will learn the basics of fishing. All equipment will be provided. A Nevada fishing license is required for anglers 12 and older. Register by calling (702) 486-5127, extension 3503, beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
