HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, watch the documentary "When Dinosaurs Roamed the Earth," then go for a moderate, two-mile hike in Pine Creek to look for fossils; for ages 10 and older. On Jan. 22, find the lowest elevation for pinyon pine trees and learn interesting history about the Las Vegas Valley on a moderate, 3.3-mile hike in Pine Creek; for ages 12 and older. Also on Jan. 22, come along for an easy, two-mile hike along the Moenkopi trail; for ages 5 and older.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn about the animals of Red Rock in a tabletop exhibit from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Tuesday, view the types of animals that live in the canyon in a tabletop presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Saturday, children ages 2 to 6 can learn about birds and their beaks through stories, activities, music and a craft. Also on Saturday, join the book club for its review of the second half of Timothy Egan's "The Big Burn" (the first half was reviewed Nov. 19).

Mount Charleston: Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort will host a ski and snowboard contest at 11 a.m. Saturday. The event is open to men and women of all ages, and registration runs from 9 to 10 a.m. The entry fee is $25, and lift tickets will cost $35. For more information, call (702) 385-2754.
