Outdoor activities around Southern Nevada
HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Jan. 8, look for wildlife on a moderate, 3.3-mile hike to the First Creek grotto; for ages 12 and older. Also on Jan. 8, trek up Ash Meadow Canyon and down Gateway Canyon on a moderate-to-strenuous, five-mile hike; for ages 10 and older.
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn about the animals of Red Rock in a tabletop exhibit from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Tuesday, view the types of arachnids, reptiles, birds and mammals found in the area in a tabletop presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Saturday, children ages 2 to 6 can learn about desert tortoises through stories, activities, music and a craft. Also on Saturday, meet Mascot Max, a representation of Mojave Max the desert tortoise, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the visitor center.
Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
