Deadline looms for wild turkey tag applications

Hunters hoping to draw a wild turkey tag for Nevada's 2011 spring hunting season shouldn't wait much longer. The deadline for submitting tag applications is 5 p.m. Feb.15, and they must be delivered through a postal service.

In order to apply, hunters must have a license valid March 1, 2010, through Feb. 28, 2011. But they can purchase a 2011-12 hunting license online as part of the application process. Successful tag holders must have a hunting license valid from March 1, 2011, through Feb. 29, 2012, when hunting under authority of a 2011 spring wild turkey tag.

Paper tag applications and regulations are available at Nevada Department of Wildlife regional offices in Las Vegas, Elko and Reno. They also are available at the Henderson field office and online at www.ndow.org. Hunters can apply for a tag online at www.huntnevada.com. Results of the tag draw will be posted online and at NDOW offices March 4.

DON'T MISS OUT

New hunting and fishing licenses now available

February's arrival marks the beginning of the end for Nevada's hunters and anglers because it means their 2010-11 hunting and fishing licenses are about to expire. That occurs at midnight Feb. 28. The good news is they already can purchase their 2011-12 licenses so they won't have to miss any time in the field.

Hunting and fishing licenses can be purchased at Nevada Department of Wildlife offices in Reno, Elko, Las Vegas and Henderson, online at www.ndow.org, and at any of the many license vendors located throughout the state. A list of approved license vendors can be found on the NDOW website.

NDOW offers a variety of license and pricing options. A full list of possibilities is available online at www.ndow.org. A list of available hunter education classes also is listed.

BIG EVENT

Archery in the Schools
state tournament takes flight

More than 300 student archers from area schools are expected to line up and take their shots when the curtain goes up on the Nevada National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament on Thursday at the Riviera.

Returning to the tournament for a second consecutive year, and representing the Northwest Career and Technical Academy, is sophomore Andrew Harris. Harris, who is legally blind. He gained recognition and the respect of fellow archers for his performance during the 2010 NASP Nevada State Tournament.

The first flight will begin at 9 a.m., and the public is welcome.

Tournament participants will be divided into three scoring divisions -- elementary school, middle school and high school -- and awards will be distributed within those divisions.
