Big game application deadline soon

Hunters hoping to draw a 2007 Nevada big game tag need to submit their application no later than 5 p.m. April 16. Applications must be mailed through a postal service or submitted online at www.huntnevada.com. Applicants using a postal service should allow three or four days to ensure they meet the deadline.

If they haven't done so already, hunters born after January 1, 1960, must complete a hunter education class before they can purchase a Nevada hunting license. A list of classes can be found on the Nevada Department of Wildlife Web site -- www.ndow.org.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Fishing in the city perfect for season

Spring is in full swing and that means it's time to enjoy the beautiful weather before our daytime temperatures reach triple digits. For many anglers it's time to head to their favorite fishing holes. Unfortunately, many can't leave the city because of work, school and family responsibilities. However, that doesn't mean you can't go fishing. The Nevada Department of Wildlife has provided fishing opportunities at four urban ponds.

The urban ponds are located at Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road, Lorenzi Park, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Floyd Lamb State Park, 9300 Tule Springs Road and Veteran's Memorial Park in Boulder City. All of the ponds have recently received healthy numbers of pan-sized rainbow trout and will also receive a monthly planting of catfish during the summer months.

Fishing tends to be better in the morning and evening when the temperatures are cooler and fish feed more aggressively. Often anglers can fill their limit in just an hour or two.

Free fishing instruction for all ages scheduled

Would you like to learn how and where to fish in Southern Nevada? Or what equipment or bait to use? Perhaps you just want to be more comfortable fishing with your kids. The Nevada Department of Wildlife is offering a class to help. This beginner's class will cover the basics, such as knot tying, casting skills, fish identification and how to figure out where the fish are.

Slated for April 21 at Sunset Park, all ages are welcome. Class begins at 9 a.m. A Nevada fishing license with trout stamp will be required for those persons 12 years of age or older who will be fishing. Rods and reels will be available.
