Learn to fly-fish at free introductory class

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will be having a free Introduction to Fly Fishing class on April 25. The class is divided into two parts, with the first part beginning at 8 a.m. at the NDOW Las Vegas office, 4747 Vegas Drive.

The second portion, which covers casting skills, will be later that morning at Floyd Lamb Park. The class will cover basics such as knot tying, terminology and the equipment needed to fly fish, along with casting skills.

LEARN TO TIE

Fly-tying workshop scheduled

Anglers who are interested in taking up fly-tying may want to attend a free workshop offered by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The agency has a fly-tying workshop scheduled at 6:30 p.m. April 28.

Participants in this hands-on, entry-level course will learn the basics of tying fishing flies: equipment, materials, terminology and techniques for creating flies. All equipment and materials will be provided. The class will be at the NDOW office at 4747 Vegas Drive. For registration and more information, contact 486-5127, Ext. 3503.

CATCH A GLIMPSE

Wildlife viewing event set for Saturday

Spring is the time to view wildlife, and to help people enjoy that opportunity, the Nevada Department of Wildlife is sponsoring a Wildlife Watch on Saturday. The free wildlife viewing event will take place at the Overton Wildlife Management Area from 9-11 a.m.

The Wildlife Watch will consist of a guided hike through the management area. Participants will receive a photographic reference to commonly sighted species as well as some wildlife-watching tips. Hikers also will learn about animal tracks and other signs of animal presence. The watch is suitable for adults and children, but not pets.

Overton Wildlife Management Area is at 1000 Waterfowl Road., off Moapa Valley Boulevard at the east end of Overton. It can be reached by taking Interstate 15 north from Las Vegas to Highway 169 east or by Highway 169 north from the Valley of Fire or Lake Mead. The Wildlife Watch is part of National Environmental Education Week. For more information call Margie Klein at 486-5127, Ext. 3502.
