Registration open for variety of city arts classes

Registration is open and continues through Jan. 3 for classes offered by the city of Las Vegas Arts & Community Events Division at the Charleston Heights Arts Center and the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center.

Children and adults have an opportunity to explore a variety of arts classes, including ballet, jazz, guitar, mariachi, cartooning and pottery.

Call either of the centers for a free class schedule or view it online at www.lasvegas parksandrec.com.

Fees for the six-week class session, which begins the week of Jan. 8, start at $25 for group classes. Private music instruction is $90.

The Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., has added beginning and intermediate levels of ballet and contemporary jazz dance classes for the home-schooled student. Classes are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-1 p.m., 1-2 p.m. and 4-5 p.m.

Other classes are also available for both children and adults, including private piano and voice lessons, acting for ages 10-12, and Pilates for adults. Call 229-6383 for information.

The East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, located at 250 N. Eastern Ave., offers a variety of dance classes, including ballet folklorico, hula, Latin dance workout, salsa and world dance.

Additional classes include computers, Spanish conversation, group and private music lessons and several visual arts classes such as cartooning, drawing, youth clay art, pottery, ceramic sculpture and weaving.

Also available are three-week specialty workshops in hand-made cards and raku firing (Japanese pottery technique). Many of the classes are taught in English and Spanish.
