Registration under way for RecTrek program for children
Clark County Parks and Recreation will offer the school-break program RecTrek for ages 6-12 June 9 through Aug. 22.
The program offers arts and crafts, sports, games and other activities from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, except for the July Fourth holiday.
The fee is $65 per week, or $14 per day, per child. Families with three children are eligible for a 50 percent discount for the third child. Registration is under way and is on a first come, first served basis. Field trips may be offered for an additional fee.
RecTrek is available at the following recreation centers: Desert Breeze, 8275 Spring Mountain Road (455-8334); Helen Meyer, 4525 New Forest Drive (455-7723); Paradise, 4775 McLeod Drive (455-7513); Parkdale, 3200 Ferndale St. (455-7517); Sunrise, 2240 Linn Lane (455-7600); Cambridge, 3930 Cambridge St. (455-7169); Hollywood, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd. (455-0566); and Walnut, 3075 N. Walnut Road (455-8402).

* William Zhu, a senior at The Meadows School, has been named a recipient of the National Merit Lockheed Martin Scholarship. The scholarship is one of 200 corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships financed by companies, foundations and business organizations. A recipient of the corporate-sponsored scholarship may receive $500 to $10,000 annually for as many as four years of college undergraduate study, or receive a single payment of between $2,500 and $5,000.
* "College: The Real Life," a free college preparation workshop, will be offered for Clark County School District high school students from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10 at Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J. St.
The workshop will include information on testing and admissions exams, financial aid, college life and other topics. Pupils need to register by Friday. For more information, call 229-6374.
* Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Visual and Performing Arts will present an orchestra concert featuring the Philharmonic Strings performing Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Cellos and the "Four Seasons" concertos at 6 p.m. Friday in the Lowden Theatre for the Performing Arts, Ninth Street and Clark Avenue. Tickets are $6 per person and $20 for a family of four or more. For more information, call 799-7848.
* Four young men from the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boys Scouts of America have recently become Eagle Scouts:
Nathan Gorde, 16, is the son of Steve and Diana Gorde. He is a member of Troop No. 700.
Chris Maurer, 14, is the son of Greg and Molly Maurer. He is a member of Troop No. 270.
Grant Montoya, 15, is the son of Raymond and Brenda Montoya. He is a member of Troop No. 474.
Dylan Shults, 14, is the son of Toni Dover. He is a member of Troop No. 167.
