Sculpture show now on display

"Good Wood & Magic Featuring Faces of Las Vegas," an art exhibit of wood sculptures by local artist Sydney LaMont Waithe Sr., is currently on display in the community gallery at the West Las Vegas Arts Center.

The public is invited to meet Waithe and watch him demonstrate his technique at a free reception 2 p.m. Dec. 8. The arts center is located at 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. For more information, call 229-4800.

For nearly 50 years, Waithe has been making artwork that expresses his belief in racial harmony. Although mostly self taught, he also studied at Stock School of Art and Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill.

Since moving to Las Vegas, Waithe has opened Spart IV Art Studio in the Arts District, where he creates his wood sculptures. He concentrates on using colors of humanity: red, black, white, brown and yellow.
