THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week
DVDS
"The Game Plan" (PG): Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a playboy football player who suddenly has a young girl turn up on his doorstep claiming to be the daughter he didn't know he had. It's a fluffy family comedy that's formulaic and sugary sweet, but Johnson and young Madison Pettis have a charm that makes it watchable. Extras include deleted scenes and featurettes.
Also out today: "Blonde Ambition" (PG-13); "The Hunting Party" (R); "The Kingdom: Series 2" (Unrated); "Saw IV" (R and Unrated versions available); "Sydney White" (PG-13); "Barney Miller: The Complete Second Season" (Unrated); and "The Jeff Corwin Experience: Season One" (Unrated).
CDS
Cat Power, "Jukebox": On her second covers album, Chan Marshall doesn't just re-interpret other artists' songs, she haunts them.
With her equally reedy and resonant voice, the Cat Power frontwoman tackles everyone from James Brown to Creedence Clearwater Revival, shrouding the tunes in mystery and seduction.
We're still holding out for a nice Megadeth cover, though. Maybe next time.
Also in stores: The Audition, "Champion"; Natasha Bedingfield, "Pocketful of Sunshine"; Black Mountain, "In the Future"; Ray Bonneville, "Goin' By Feel"; Matt Costa, "Unfamiliar Faces"; Drive-By Truckers, "Brighter Than Creation's Dark"; Hello Blue Roses, "The Portrait Is Finished & I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty"; Patty Larkin, "Watch the Sky"; The Matinee Club, "The Modern LP"; MGMT, "Oracular Spectacular"; moe., "Sticks and Stones"; and Leon Russell, "Bad Country."
