Here are a few things in news, sports, entertainment and pop culture that we've been talking about lately.
• Oprah Winfrey unveils her own 24/7 cable network. Somewhere, in an alternate universe, Winfrey is a tyrannical ruler who demands that her subjects improve themselves -- or else!
• In the wake of last month's theft of $1.5 million worth of casino chips, Bellagio announces that it will discontinue its standard $25,000 chips. Note to thieves: They'll probably make very nice earrings.
• Brett Favre u25B6 says he's retiring from pro football. And if Brett Favre says something, you can take it to the bank.
• The American Red Cross is giving blood donors in seven northeastern states a free pound of Dunkin' Donuts coffee during January. Throw in a half-dozen crullers and you can have a kidney, too.
