BASIC HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1982 TO HOST 30-YEAR REUNION THIS WEEKEND

Basic High School's class of 1982 plans to host its 30-year reunion Friday through Sunday. Events scheduled include a tailgate party Friday before Basic's homecoming football game; a dinner party Saturday; and a picnic Sunday at the Lake Mead picnic area. A motorcycle ride and a round of golf also are being planned for those interested.

VEGAS PBS TO HOST FUNDRAISER FOR STUDENT HEALTH PROGRAM

Vegas PBS plans to host its third annual 5K run and one-mile walk to support the Keeping Kids Fit program, which educates students on healthy eating and exercise habits, at 8 a.m. Saturday at Vegas PBS, 3050 E. Flamingo Road.

Registration is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. and is $40 on race day.

FAITH LUTHERAN JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL PLANS BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCIL BREAKFAST

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way, plans to host the semiannual Business Advisory Council Breakfast from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at the Kalb Student Center.

The scheduled guest speaker will be Dr. Steve Buuck, CEO of Faith Lutheran, who will deliver the State of the School address.

UNLV LIBRARIES TO HOST SOCIAL MEDIA WORKSHOP FOR ENTREPRENEURS

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries' Business by the Book Workshop Series is scheduled to continue from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 10 with Social Media Socialized at UNLV's Lied Library, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

The free workshop "will familiarize business owners with tools necessary to use social media to their advantage," according to UNLV Libraries.

The workshop series teaches business owners and entrepreneurs which online resources are available at UNLV Libraries.

FAITH LUTHERAN FUNDRAISER SCHEDULED

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School plans to host Crusader Knight, a gala fundraiser, at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. Charleston Blvd. The event will feature a silent auction, dinner and student entertainment.

Tickets are $250 per person. A $500 donation will sponsor a teacher and a guest. Sponsorship packages range from $2,500 to $25,000 for a table of 10.

SPARK! POETRY CONTEST OPEN TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Clark County high school students are invited to enter the Spark! poetry contest sponsored by the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Guidelines are available at vegasvalleybookfestival.org or at the Nevada Arts Council office at 2755 E. Desert Inn Road, Suite 155. The deadline for submission is at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Winners will receive cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300. Students will be judged on their original poems and their recitation at the festival Nov. 3.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY schedules PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR

Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St., is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24. The event is free and open to the public.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling is sponsoring the event to allow college-bound students to meet with admission representatives from colleges, universities, studios, festivals and other educational institutions with visual and performing arts programs. Students will learn about admission and financial aid, portfolio days, auditions, student life and more.

SCHOOL DISTRICT FAMILIES CAN RECEIVE DISCOUNTED INTERNET SERVICE

CenturyLink Inc. has partnered with the Clark County School District to provide discounted broadband Internet to low-income students and their families.

Eligible families can receive basic high-speed Internet service starting at $9.95 per month for the first year, plus taxes and fees. Additional fees will be incurred after one year. Higher bandwidth services also are available at discounted rates.

WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE DONATIONS FROM CREDIT UNION

More than 100 low-income students at Western High School, 4601 W. Bonanza Road, received donated school supplies last month from SCE Federal Credit Union. Donations were collected in August at local SCE branches.

TWITCHELL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AS SUMMER'S TOP READERS

Students at Twitchell Elementary School, 2060 Desert Shadow Trail, recorded the most reading minutes during Henderson Libraries' Summer Reading Program. Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen is scheduled to present the school with a plaque Oct. 15.

Henderson preschool and elementary school students read more than 2.2 million combined minutes during summer break.

SEDWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL GETS HELP FROM BARRICK GOLD CORP.

Sedway Middle School, 3465 Englestad St., will receive long-term support from local nonprofit organization Communities In Schools of Nevada. Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp. is sponsoring Sedway and a school in Elko for four years and $1.2 million. CISN will provide free medical and dental care, counseling, food, clothing, tutoring and more to Sedway students and families.
