Five students arrested or cited in fray at Chaparral High
Clark County School District police pepper sprayed a group of fighting students at Chaparral High School Friday morning.
The fight broke out about 11 a.m. during a lunch break at the campus near Flamingo Road and U.S. Highway 95, Capt. Ken Young said.
About five students were fighting in the middle of a crowd of roughly 100 students. Two officers tried to break up the fight, and when verbal commands and physical intervention failed, they used pepper spray, Young said.
The spray affected some of the surrounding students, but it was unclear whether anyone needed medical attention, he said. No one was taken to the hospital.
One student was arrested on charges of battery on a police officer and obstruction. Four others were cited with the charge of affray for taking part in the fight.
Young said parents should remind their children to avoid campus fights because they can be hurt not only by pepper spray but by wayward fists or other unintended consequences.
"Impress upon your kids if a fight breaks out, go the opposite way," he said.
