A judge on Tuesday ordered the Clark County School District to disclose additional details from redacted records that pertain to alleged inappropriate behavior of Trustee Kevin Child.
The records, which the Las Vegas Review-Journal sued to obtain, must now reveal names of employees and schools that the district initially withheld. Victims of alleged sexual harassment, students, and support staff are to be exempted from disclosure.
“In keeping complaints against Kevin Child secret, the Clark County School District has insulated the trustee from accountability,” Review-Journal Editor-in-Chief Keith Moyer said. “In concealing the identities of schools and school employees who have brought complaints against Child, the system has hidden the scope of the problem and actually emboldened Child, giving him no reason to cease the conduct in question. Shining the brightest light possible on Child is the only way to deal with him.”
The district argued that releasing the names would produce a “chilling effect” on employees who come forward to document a complaint.
“The people’s fearfulness of retaliation is real,” Adam Honey, an attorney for the district, told Clark County District Court Judge Timothy Williams.
Records so far released include reports that span April 2014 to October 2016.
“It’s unquestionable that the public has a right to know about the actions of CCSD trustees it elects,” said Review-Journal attorney Maggie McLetchie. “And about how administrators have handled the myriad complaints and allegations that span years.”
