Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce honored for education advocacy

The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce has received the Nevada Association of School Boards' executive committee friend of education award for being a vocal advocate for public school students.

Chamber President and CEO Kristin McMillan received the award Nov. 17 at the association's annual conference in Reno. It is the first time the association presented the award to an organization.

During the 2011 Legislature, the chamber provided significant support for education reform bills in the Assembly and Senate. It also created an Education Policy Committee, which regularly brings together community and business leaders to discuss education issues.

The chamber recruited dozens of volunteer mentors to support the district's Reclaim Your Future campaign, which brought thousands of dropout seniors back to school to complete their education.

"The future prosperity of our community depends upon having a workforce that is well-educated and prepared to take on the needs of a 21st century economy," McMillan said.
