Some public charter schools in the Las Vegas Valley are using additional state money to increase pay for their employees by as much as 20 percent.

Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro said school districts have the ability to access new education funding authorized by the Legislature to pay teachers and staff “what they’re owed.”
The Clark County School Board will consider the tentative agreement with the Education Support Employees Association and Teamsters Local 14 during a special meeting Friday.

The Clark County School District announced that it has filed a lawsuit to prevent the teachers union from taking threatened actions that amount to a strike.
“If we do not have an agreement with the school (district) by Aug. 26, our organization and our members will be taking a vote to engage in work actions,” said John Vellardita, CCEA executive director and chief negotiator.

The agreement includes a 10 percent salary increase during the first year and 2 percent in the second.
About 94 percent of classrooms currently have a licensed teacher — up from 92 percent at this time last year, the district said.
The district announced the change in a news release Monday, saying events will be rescheduled “once labor contracts are in place with all employee bargaining units.”
Hiring events are underway this week for crossing guards, who must be at least 18 and work two hours a day.
