7 displaced after Henderson apartment fire

Seven people were displaced from two separate Henderson apartments Tuesday after an unattended cooking fire caused $18,000 worth of damage, officials said.

The fire started at 4:20 p.m. in a second-story unit at Morrell Park Apartments, 525 Harris St., near the intersection of Boulder Highway and Major Avenue, Henderson Fire Department spokeswoman Kathleen Richards said. Someone was home when it happened and called 911.

Five engines, two trucks and two rescue units fought the fire, she said. There were no injuries.

Two adults and three children were living in the unit where the blaze started, and all five were displaced along with two adults from a neighboring apartment.

“Unattended cooking is the number one cause of fires in Henderson,” a statement from the department later said. Richards advised people who are cooking to stay in the kitchen, monitor oil temperatures and be generally cautious.
