Clark County to honor man who helped crossing guard during attack

Clark County plans to recognize a Las Vegas man who intervened in October when a crossing guard was attacked in a school zone.

After forcing a driver to stop at his assigned crosswalk near Gehring Elementary School, at Maryland Parkway near Silverado Ranch Boulevard, a man got out out of a vehicle and punched and kicked crossing guard Dano McKay, 64. Passerby Robert Gibbs, a railroad police officer who retired from Metro, came to his rescue.

Gibbs pulled the man off the crossing guard, but not before getting hurt himself. The man “fishhooked” Gibbs, using a finger to rip the corner of his mouth. Gibbs later got six stitches for the wound.

Police later arrived and arrested the man.

For his efforts, the Clark County Commission will recognize Gibbs with a Distinguished Medal of Honor and a proclamation declaring Tuesday “Robert Gibbs Day.” The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Commission Chambers at the Clark County Government Center in downtown Las Vegas.
