Coroner identifies man who died crossing Blue Diamond Road

The pedestrian hit while crossing Blue Diamond Road on Monday has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as 79-year-old Russell Lake Newell.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, Newell was crossing numerous lanes of traffic on Blue Diamond Road near Edmond Street around 8:45 a.m. when he was struck by a 2011 Toyota Sportsvan.

Sgt. Kevin Honea said Newell was not in the crosswalk when he was struck by the minivan, and many drivers managed to avoid hitting him.

Witness reports indicate that the driver of the Toyota attempted to avoid Newell and was not at fault for the accident, Honea said.
