SELF-DEFENSE WORKSHOP PLANNED
AT PARADISE RECREATION CENTER

The Paradise Recreation Center, 4775 S. McLeod Drive, plans to host a free self-defense class for participants 16 or older from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 18.

NRA-certified instructor David Thomas is set to lead the class.

Participants will learn techniques to protect themselves during a home intrusion.

NONPROFIT SEEKS BOTTLED WATER,
CANNED FOOD TO HELP VETERANS

Veterans Village, 1150 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is seeking donations of bottled water and canned food to provide relief to veterans and individuals in need.

The nonprofit, which offers services and temporary housing for veterans, said it is running low on supplies as recipients seek respite from the heat.

Services offered by Veterans Village include housing, nutrition, life skills training, employment training and referrals, continuing education and degree programs, exercise training, medical assistance, mental health counseling and veteran-centric activities and events.

VALLEY HEALTH SYSTEM ADVISES PRECAUTIONS DURING FLOODING

The Valley Health System recently offered tips for residents to stay safe during flash floods.

n Do not drive or walk through water when you can’t see the street or pavement.

n If caught in your vehicle during a flash flood, stay put until help arrives.

n Know where the detention basins and washes are in your neighborhood, and if it looks like rain, stay away from those areas. They could include walking, biking and hiking trails and other recreation areas.

n Playing in flood water is unsafe for a variety of reasons, including the speed of the water and risk of infection due to contaminants.

SEWER WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS ALONG STRETCH OF LAKE MEAD BOULEVARD

A sewer rehabilitation project is slated to cause delays and traffic restrictions along Lake Mead Boulevard from Rancho to Hills Center drives into the fourth quarter of the year, according to the city of Las Vegas.

Crews are set to repair or replace about 23,000 feet of 21- to 27-inch sewer line and 70 manholes on Lake Mead Boulevard. In addition, 18 manholes on Hills Center Drive from Lake Mead Boulevard to Covington Cross Drive will also be repaired or replaced.

Work is set to occur overnight in nonresidential areas and during daytime in residential areas. Motorists can expect lane closures, and pedestrians can expect sidewalk closures. East-west travel alternatives include Cheyenne Avenue and Craig Road. Pedestrian and business access will be maintained during construction, the city said.

Las Vegas Paving is the contractor for the $7.1 million project.

DISCARD DOCUMENTS, MEDICATION, CELLPHONES AND MORE AT JULY 27 EVENT

Residents can discard documents, prescription medication, small household appliances, cellphones and related accessories during Sizzling for Green, set for 8 to 11 a.m. July 27 in the southern parking lot at All-American Park, 1551 S. Buffalo Drive, near Oakey Boulevard.

Donations of gently used clothing also will be accepted. Volunteers are slated to be on hand to help residents with their items, according to Las Vegas City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian and City Councilman Bob Beers. There is a five-box limit per vehicle for document shredding. Police personnel will accept the prescription medication for disposal.

CITY OFFERS YEAR-ROUND AMNESTY
FOR RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

The city of Las Vegas has expanded its amnesty program, waiving penalties year-round on self-disclosed residential construction conducted without permits.

Homeowners will be subject to paying regular fees for permits, inspections and plan reviews but not penalties. Fees for residential-related construction range from $60 to more than $400.

The primary goal of the amnesty is to encourage safety and self-disclosure of nonpermitted work and obtain compliance.

To apply for the program, a homeowner must contact the building department to obtain the necessary permit forms. The homeowner must also take part in a five-minute training session regarding the permit process.

The most common residential projects built on residential property without the necessary permits are garage conversions, room additions, patio covers and water heater installations, building officials said.

HENDERSON POLICE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CITIZENS’ ACADEMY

The Henderson Police Department is accepting applications through July 25 for its upcoming Citizens’ Academy, planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from Aug. 13 to Nov. 5.

The goal of the academy is to build a bridge between residents and police and provide a condensed version of a police academy.

Graduates of the program can gain insight into the life and training of a law enforcement officer. Topics to be covered include radio and communication, community policing, use of force, gang enforcement, crime scene investigation, detention center procedures, criminal justice, domestic violence and criminalistics.

Applicants must live or work in the city of Henderson, be at least age 18 and have no felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor convictions.

TALK SHOP WITH THE COPS EVENT
SET FOR JULY 23 AT WHITNEY RANCH

The Henderson Police Department plans a Talk Shop with the Cops event from 6 to 7 p.m. July 23 at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, and from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Heritage Senior Center, 300 S. Racetrack Road.

The events are slated to focus on issues such as traffic, crime trends and neighborhood safety. A question-and-answer period is planned after the presentations.

The gatherings give residents a chance to voice any concerns and are geared to foster cooperation between police and the public.
