RESIDENT APPRECIATES UPGRADES ON ST. ROSE PARKWAY
My place of business is at the end of St. Rose Parkway, and I have driven the same route for many years. It started out as a two-lane road that seemed to take forever to get to my destination. Over the past 14 years, many improvements have been made. It is now expanded to, I believe, eight lanes and has been built up so much that the drive is enjoyable now.
It has new walking paths with benches, lights, trash bags and trees/bushes. Months ago, I noticed rock formations with beautiful flowers and cactuses made out of metal, and the famous tortoise and hare. Yesterday, I noticed a new statue of a bobcat on a rock.
I just wanted to thank the beautification committee and whoever did the actual work. It is noticed and enjoyed! Keep up the work, and let's make Henderson a wonderful place to live.

READER SUPPORTS NEW STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESIDENT
Our Spring Valley, southwest, Clark County and state of Nevada education system has gotten a big boost. Wynn Resorts director and education advocate Elaine Pascal Wynn (former wife of Wynn Resorts CEO Steve Wynn) was appointed and sworn in as a board member of the State Board of Education recently. She was appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and at the board meeting elected its president.
State Superintendent James Guthrie says the new board and appointment of Wynn represents a new day for education in Nevada. I agree because Wynn brings a new, bold vision to our state education system.
And her credentials are impeccable. She was appointed by former Gov. Jim Gibbons as co-chair of the Education Reform Blue Ribbon Task Force in 2010, is the founding chairwoman of Communities in Schools of Nevada, the current chairwoman of the national board of Communities in Schools, a trustee of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and a board member of the Library of Congress Trust Fund.
In this new reform paradigm, party partisanship must defer to what's best for our children. And parents must do more and get involved, especially in PTA meetings. Of equal importance, parents must set the example and be role models at home for their children, especially in reading and understanding our society.
Therein, books and subscriptions to newspapers should be utilized to the fullest. With Wynn as president, my faith in our school system is returning. Her presence assures the necessary major attention from the media and public to make things happen for the better.
