Driver dies after striking light poles in morning crash on Cheyenne

A 54-year-old man died Sunday morning after striking two light poles in his vehicle on Cheyenne Avenue near Michael Way, Las Vegas police said.

The identity of the deceased Las Vegas man was not released.

Police said at 8:34 a.m. the man was behind the wheel of a 2000 Lexus traveling west on Cheyenne Avenue. The vehicle stopped at Michael Way and a passenger, 53-year-old Susan Douglass, of Las Vegas, exited the car, police said.

The Lexus suddenly sped off, knocking Douglass to the ground. She sustained minor injuries, police said.

The car crossed over the center median, entered the eastbound travel lanes, struck a curb and hit two light poles before coming to a rest. The driver was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

The incident marked the year's 13th traffic-related fatality under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police.
