Elderly driver killed in northwest valley collision

An 81-year-old woman died Tuesday morning after a head-on collision with a pickup truck Monday afternoon on Cheyenne Avenue near U.S. Highway 95, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Lupe M. Rangel, of Las Vegas, died in the crash, the Highway Patrol said.

She was at fault in the collision because she ignored a red light before entering an intersection about 12:50 p.m. Monday, the Highway Patrol said.

Rangel was driving a Oldsmobile Cutlass east on Cheyenne approaching the intersection with the U.S. 95 northbound off ramp. A Dodge Ram was stopped on the highway's north off ramp.

The Highway Patrol said Rangel ignored a red light at the intersection while the driver of the Ram entered the intersection on a green light.

The Cutlass' right front struck the Ram's left front.

Rangel was pronounced dead shortly after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at MountainView Hospital.
