Home burns while Las Vegas owner is away
June 23, 2012 - 3:00 pm
Las Vegas fire investigators are trying to determine what caused about $100,000 in damage to a home early Saturday while the owner who lived there was in California.
Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters responded before 2 a.m. to a neighborhood at West Washington Avenue and North Tonopah Drive after receiving calls of heavy smoke coming from a one-story home at 1951 Sutro Lane.
"It must have been smoldering for hours," Szymanski said, adding, "It was mostly smoke and made it difficult to find the fire."
Firefighters encountered thick smoke before locating the fire in the master bedroom closet.
"It only took a minute to put the fire out," Szymanski said.
He said most of the damage was caused by smoke and intense heat.
