Las Vegas man gets prison time for tax scheme using identities of dead people

A Las Vegas man was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison Tuesday for participating in a scheme to file false tax returns under the stolen identities of dead people.

Nicholas Pappas, 29, also was ordered to serve three years of supervised release after prison and pay $67,115 in restitution to the IRS.

Pappas pleaded guilty in December to one felony count of conspiracy to defraud the IRS with respect to claims.

According to his plea agreement, Pappas admitted he filed 30 false tax returns online seeking roughly $248,000 in refunds. He listed phony wages and deductions in the names of the dead people on the returns.

Pappas is to surrender to federal prison authorities on June 19.
