Man struck and killed crossing Rainbow Boulevard

A 44-year-old Las Vegas man was killed after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle late Saturday while crossing Tropicana Avenue west of the Rainbow Boulevard intersection, police said.

The man's name was not released pending notification of his next of kin, but he will be identified later by the coroner's office.

According to a Las Vegas police news release, the man was struck about 11:20 p.m. Saturday by a 2002 Ford Explorer that was heading east on Tropicana Avenue. The Ford Explorer was driven by Melissa Medina, 18, of Henderson, who remained at the scene.

Witnesses told police the front of the Ford Explorer hit the man who was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk.

He was transported to University Medical Center's trauma unit where he was pronounced dead.

The accident is under investigation. It was the 79th traffic-related fatality this year for Las Vegas police.
