Meetings on Vegas soccer stadium set

Curious about how a proposed soccer stadium for Symphany Park in downtown Las Vegas will be paid for?

The city has scheduled two meetings for residents to learn about the financing plan behind the proposed soccer venue, which is being proposed by the partnership of development company Cordish Cos. and local Findlay Sports & Entertainment.

The Cordish-Findlay duo is trying to win a Major League Soccer expansion team while also building a new soccer-only stadium.

The first meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. , Aug. 4, at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 North J St. The second meeting is set for 5:30 p.m., Aug. 7, in City Council chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 495 South Main St.

KCLV Channel 2 plans to televise the Aug. 7 meeting live.

Residents may also provide their comments online at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/stadium. The online town hall will be open for comments until Aug. 11.

The City Council is scheduled to discuss the MLS team and stadium issue on Aug. 20.

Las Vegas is competing against at least five other markets for a final MLS expansion team. Sacramento and San Diego in California, Austin and San Antonio in Texas and Minneapolis are also vying for an MLS team. The MLS wants a 24th team by the end of the decade.

Cordish unsuccessfully attempted to build an arena in Symphany Park, but the city council this year approved a partnership between Cordish and Findlay to explore building a soccer stadium and landing an MLS team.
