Memorial Saturday for hiker who died in Red Rock fall

A brother of an avid hiker found dead in March at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area announced a public memorial is scheduled this week in Las Vegas.

Darrell Kirk said the 5 p.m. Saturday ceremony in a plaza near the Student Union building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will mark Ronald Kirk’s involvement in the university history program.

It also will provide a forum to thank rescuers and volunteers who spent several weekends looking for Ronald Kirk after he was reported missing Jan. 22.

Kirk’s body was found March 10 after a fall of several hundred feet in rugged terrain at the popular hiking area about 20 miles west of the Strip.

The Clark County coroner ruled the death an accident.
