Motorcyclist dies in accident in northeast Las Vegas

A 58-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a man alleged to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Las Vegas police said.

The identity of the deceased man was not released.

Prentiss Bates, 37, of Las Vegas, was uninjured and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The collision occurred at 2:14 p.m. near the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue.

Police said Bates was driving a 2012 Ford Focus north on Nellis when the vehicle crossed a raised median into ongoing traffic traveling south on Nellis.

That's when the Focus struck the motorcyclist's custom chopper head on. The motorcyclist, from Las Vegas, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal collision was the 96th under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police this year. The incident remains under investigation.
