Las Vegas police have identified the officer who shot and killed an escaped chimpanzee in northwest Las Vegas Thursday as Sgt. Andrew Legrow.
Legrow shot down Buddy, one of two chimpanzees that escaped from their enclosure at 5720 Rowland Ave., at about 10:45 a.m. as Buddy tried to cross Ann Road toward a residential area near Jones Boulevard. A videotape of the incident shows the chimp, who does not appear agitated, ambling along. An officer armed with an AR-15 rifle shoots Buddy at least twice as the chimp begins to cross Ann Road.
The other chimpanzee, a female named C.J., was successfully tranquilized and taken back to a different enclosure at the property.
Legrow, a 49-year-old patrol sergeant currently with the Northwest Area Command, has been with Las Vegas police for 27 years.
