Officials warn drivers about burros on Route 159
With clocks rolling back this weekend and earlier evenings on the way, federal officials warn motorists that they should be especially careful of wild burros along state Route 159 near Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
In the past year, 11 burros were struck by vehicles and either killed or sustained injuries leading to euthanization, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
"This is an area where people tend to feed the burros," Krystal Johnson, BLM wild horse and burro specialist, said in a statement. "Now they're accustomed to being fed, and they hang alongside the road waiting for food. They hear the cars coming and think it's feeding time."
It is illegal to feed, pet or harass a wild horse or burro, and violations of such are punishable by fine.
