One dead, one critical in I-15 accident near Sloan

One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a tire malfunction caused a single-car accident on Interstate 15 near the Sloan exit.

Nevada Highway Patrol got a call at 12:20 p.m. that a Dodge Durango driving north with six occupants went out of control, veered into the shoulder and flipped. One occupant, a 39-year-old female, was declared dead at the scene. Another female was airlifted to University Medical Center, where she is in critical condition. The other four were transported to UMC by ground.

Trooper Loy Hixson said all six occupants, from California, were wearing seatbelts.

The driver lost control when the tread separated from the rear left tire, Hixson said. With temperatures in the triple digits, he recommended all drivers check their tires, especially before a long trip.

The right northbound lane of I-15 will remain closed until about 2:30 p.m.
