Opportunity Village president named to national panel

WASHINGTON — Bob Brown, president of the Opportunity Village Foundation in Las Vegas, was appointed Thursday to the federal panel that evaluates laws and policies that affect disabled people.

Brown was named to the National Council on Disability by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. The council is a 15-member board that advises policymakers on how to structure equal opportunities for the disabled.

Opportunity Village is Nevada’s largest charity that provides services and training to disabled people. Brown also is the incoming chairman of the board for the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce and has served on a number of community boards in Southern Nevada.

“My work with people with disabilities has taught me many valuable life lessons about the nature of possibilities and the boundless power of the human soul,” he said in accepting the appointment.

Brown is former publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, whose editorial board frequently clashes with Reid and advocated against his re-election in 2010. After shaking his hand at a chamber event in 2009, Reid told Brown: “I hope you go out of business.”

“I have known Bob Brown for a long time and can personally testify to his commitment to serving the less fortunate of Nevada,” Reid said Thursday in announcing the appointment.
