Overnight fire forces residents from apartments
A fire tore through a three-story apartment building east of the Strip early Saturday morning, displacing more than a dozen people, authorities said.
No one was injured in the blaze and Clark County firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which was reported about 1:50 a.m. at an apartment building in the 3600 block of Cambridge Street, near Maryland Parkway and Twain Avenue.
Authorities said a smoke detector alerted the residents to the fire, allowing them to escape uninjured.
Investigators determined the fire began accidentally, the result of "unattended cooking." After the blaze a public official reminded the public "to always be careful when cooking."
The blaze damaged five apartments in the building at an estimated cost of about $250,000.
The American Red Cross was assisting the displaced people in finding shelter.
