Fruitless trees can still sometimes create produce

Question: I read a small article online that you wrote about fruitless olive trees. We just had two new 36-inch box fruitless olive trees planted in our front yard. We noticed about a dozen green olives growing at the top areas of the trees.

Book Briefs for Aug. 28-Sept. 3

Planning is in high gear for the Vegas Valley Book Festival, scheduled Nov. 1-3. The festival is expected to feature more than 100 authors participating in panel discussions, readings, book signings, workshops and exhibitions.
Festival organizers are seeking community groups and individuals to volunteer at the festival’s Nov. 3 events. To sign up as a volunteer, call Bobbie Ann Howell at 895-1878.
The festival is also soliciting nominations for the Crystal Bookmark Award, an honor bestowed on a local individual and an organization for advancing the cause of literature in the Las Vegas Valley. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 21.

The meaning of rah-rah changes as we mature

Why does it seem sometimes like being a faithful, loyal American is not dissimilar to attending a high school pep rally? We’re admonished to rah-rah. Don’t get me wrong: I love to rah-rah! All I’m saying is that I grew up. At 15, I was taught the form of rah-rah. At 55, the authentic content of rah-rah becomes much more important.

Valley woman fights cancer after machete attack

Maria Del Carmen Gomez, 53, was attacked March 21 outside a convenience store at Craig Road and North Fifth Street. Her former boyfriend, Armando Vergara-Martinez, faces charges of attempted murder and domestic violence.
