Proposed liquor store at McCarran gets pre-default notice

It could be last call for a proposed liquor store in the baggage claim area of McCarran International Airport.

The airport management has served notice on Lee's Runway Liquor that it would be in default if it does not begin construction by Dec. 30. After that, Lee's would have one month to cure the default before the deal would go to the Clark County Board of Commissioners for formal termination.

Lee's won the bid for the site in August 2010.

According the Clark County Aviation director Randall Walker, Lee's intended to run it as a partnership separate from the Lee's Discount Liquor stores around the valley, but disagreements over its structure have stunted any progress toward opening.

If Lee's does not move ahead, the airport could turn to Liquor Library, which submitted the only other proposal, as a replacement with commission approval.

Airport management estimated it could raise several hundred thousand dollars a year in revenues from a package store.
