Historic home burns; man killed.

SILVER CITY — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal fire at a historic home in Silver City.

Firefighters from Lyon and Storey County said the home already was half engulfed in flames when they responded to the fire about 1 a.m. Friday.

Fire crews recovered a body from the wreckage and transported it to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office in Reno for identification.

Neighbors told KRNV-TV they believe the victim was a woman who lived in the top unit of the home that was renovated from an historic church dating to 1938.

One neighbor rescued a pet cat from the burning home. A pet dog was still missing. Neighbor Bill Watts says flames were shooting through the roof “like an inferno” when firefighters arrived.

Silver City is just south of Virginia City, in Northern Nevada.
