Nevada opposes new arguments in gay rights case

Nevada will oppose an effort by opponents of same-sex marriages to get the full 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to hear arguments to ban gay marriage in the Silver State, Gov. Brian Sandoval said Wednesday.

The Republican governor provided a quick answer to an appeals court call for briefs within three weeks from the state and an advocacy group that won the right to gay marriage on behalf of eight Nevada same-sex couples.

Sandoval said Nevada will oppose the petition by the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage.

Sandoval said he’s hopeful that will bring closure to the gay marriage issue in the state.

A panel of three 9th Circuit judges ruled Oct. 7 that same-sex wedding bans in Nevada and Idaho violated federal equal protection rights of gay couples.
