The new fall sports season is underway, which means it’s time for the Review-Journal’s first rankings for high school football, soccer and girls volleyball.
Coronado’s girls volleyball team defeated Centennial on Thursday night to qualify for the 5A state tournament. The Cougars will host Bishop Gorman for the region title Saturday.

Bishop Gorman hosted Centennial in a Class 5A Mountain League match Monday night. Gorman won in five sets.
Centennial’s Zoey Bonds won four events at the Class 5A state track and field meet and also was a setter and captain on the volleyball team, which finished second at state.
Bishop Gorman dominated Centennial in three sets in the Class 5A state championship match to win its third consecutive title and fourth in five years.
Bishop Gorman dismissed Reno in three sets before Centennial survived a five-setter against Bishop Manogue to set up an All-Southern championship match.
Both are Class 5A state volleyball semifinalists, but Gorman has been the state’s top program in the past five seasons, while Centennial has been rebuilding this season.
Bishop Gorman won its fifth straight regional championship with a three-set win over Centennial. Both teams will play in the state tournament next week.
