2 dead after Sunday night shooting in east valley

Two men were killed in a shooting at an east Las Vegas apartment complex late Sunday night.

Las Vegas police responded about 11:45 p.m. to calls about several gunshots at the Pacific Harbors Sunrise apartments, located near Sahara Avenue and Nellis Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found one man dead of apparent gunshot wounds, police said. While looking for witnesses to the shooting, officers discovered the body of a second man who also appeared to have been shot. Residents said both men appeared to have been about 25 to 30 years old.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said he heard a lot of screaming and yelling near the middle of the complex followed by five or six gunshots just after 11:30 p.m.

Homicide detectives learned there was an argument between two groups that resulted in gunfire, police said.

Complex resident Eric Rivera, who found one of the bodies before police arrived, said that the two groups were yelling loudly when one man jumped into a first-story balcony and grabbed what he described as a rifle. Rivera ran. He then heard six gunshots right after he closed his door.

“I have six kids man. I’ve gotta get out of here,” said Rivera, who kept his kids home from school Monday because they had been up all night and were still shaken from the shooting.

“Nobody wants to live here,” he said.

Rivera’s 12-year-old daughter said she saw four or five guys running west after the shooting and saw them jump over the dumpster and wall on the west side of the complex.

Police are still unsure of a motive in the shooting.

“This has been boiling over for a while now,” said the resident who did not want to be named.

This is the second time police have investigated homicides at the Pacific Harbors Sunrise apartments in four years. One man was killed and a woman was injured in what police called a drug-related shooting at the complex in Oct. 2009.

The identify and causes of death for the slain men will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office pending notification of next of kin.
