50 displaced by Sunday morning fire at apartment complex

A three-alarm fire in an apartment complex Sunday morning displaced 50 residents and caused $300,000 in damage to the structure, according to Las Vegas Fire Department officials.

Firefighters responded just before 7 a.m. to the Encantada apartment complex, 401 N. 28th St., said Tim Szymanski, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman. Flames were seen through the roof of the three-story wood-frame and stucco building east of downtown.

Szymanski said the fire appeared to have started on the second floor and spread to the attic. The fire was out about 8:15 a.m.

One of the occupants of the apartment escaped outside, while the other jumped from a second-floor balcony to the ground. The first person tried to catch the other, but both were injured in the fall. One of the two people also had slight smoke inhalation. They were transported to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire affected 24 apartment units, Szymanski said. The American Red Cross was assisting residents.

Eighty-five firefighters with 30 pieces of equipment from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County fire departments responded to the blaze.
