Active tuberculosis case identified at Liberty High School

A person at Liberty High School was diagnosed with an active case of pulmonary tuberculosis, according to the Southern Nevada Health District and the Clark County School District.

Active TB infections are contagious.

School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone said Friday that school officials are communicating with the Health District about the incident.

Students at the high school were sent home with a letter informing parents of the issue, and further messages will be sent to notify the parents of students who need testing.

Those most at risk of infection had close, personal contact with the person confirmed to have TB.

The letter said that the school’s nurse and administration will identify the students and staff that will need to be checked. The tests are required by law, and no one will be charged for them. Parents will have to sign a consent form for the procedure.

Parents were not notified of specific testing dates in the letter, but they were informed that results will be available a week or two after the test.

The Health District confirmed a total of 14 people from Henderson’s Coronado High School had latent, non-contagious TB infections last month after being exposed in Nov. 2013.
