Agency receives grant from IRS to help taxpayers

The Internal Revenue Service could actually help people pay fewer taxes in 2011.

The federal agency has given an $85,000 grant to the United Way of Southern Nevada’s “Earn It Keep It Save It” program, which provides locals with free tax services during the spring return season. Local businesses will match the grant with contributions totaling $170,000.

With the funds, the United Way will offer free tax-preparation aid to households earning less than $49,000 in 2010.

Jim Kropid, president and chief executive officer of the United Way of Southern Nevada, said a similar award last tax season enabled the nonprofit to help more than 5,500 area families claim nearly $7 million in refunds, including more than $3.1 million in federal tax credits.

IRS-certified experts will be available to help locals through 30 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites. For more information on the tax-prep program, visit uwsn.org/EITC.
