Airport officials to try to revive defunct medical clinic

Officials at McCarran International Airport will attempt to revive a now-defunct medical clinic and pharmacy that opened two years ago.

The County Commission approved terminating an agreement Tuesday with Atlanta-based AirportMD after the company failed to obtain a Clark County business license, failed to submit construction plans and failed to pay rent and other fees.

Clinic services targeted Las Vegas travelers and the airport's 17,000 employees.

Commissioners directed Randall Walker, director of aviation, to negotiate a contract with Dr. Kochy Tang, a local doctor who expressed interest in opening a new clinic. Tang was the subcontracted medical director for the previous clinic but did not run the finances.

A similar facility was built in the newly constructed Terminal 3, Walker said.

In 2009, the county entered into a 10-year agreement with AirportMD in which the company would pay the county $3,000 per month in rent plus 15 percent of gross revenues from retail sales. The company never paid up, according to county records.

County staff sent a notice of default in July to James Whitten, chief operations officer of AirportMD, noting the company owed $9,802.88.

Calls to a number listed for Whitten and the company were not returned Tuesday. A website for AirportMD no longer seems to be working and lists locations in Las Vegas and Miami. An Internet search of the company reveals that professional football player Michael Vick had invested in AirportMD at one point.

Elaine Sanchez, Aviation Department spokeswoman, said the company still owes the county $1,200.

About 30 years ago, the County Commission had an agreement with the health district to operate an airport first-aid facility. The county paid $114,454 annually for the agreement at that time.
